"THE FIRST LADY OF JAZZ"
Marie Marcus
-- In 1997 Marie celebrated her 65th year in show business.
She started in New York in the 30's playing
national radio and night clubs. During her time in New York, Marie had the extraordinary
opportunity to meet Thomas "Fats" Waller who became her friend and piano coach.
In 1942 Marie came to Cape Cod and played at the Coonamessett Inn in Falmouth, playing two
pianos with Roy Collins and Alma White. She played in Miami Beach in the 50's as part
of "Preacher Rollo and the Five Saints," and did television and radio with
the same group. She played two pianos with Leo Grimes on Cape Cod and in Florida. Marie
has also played Marion McPartland's piano Jazz Series on National Public Radio, won the
George Foster Peabody medal and performed with her trio at the Newport/New York Jazz
Festival in 1982. Highlights of her career include being in first and second editions of Who's
Who In Entertainment and Who's Who In The World. In March of 1998 Marie was
awarded the Annual Living Treasure Award by the Cape Cod Business Womens
Association for her achievements in the music industry. She is known as The First
Lady of Jazz! |
